Core Lab Highlight: Innovation Center for Biomedical Informatics, Georgetown University Medical Center

The Innovation Center for Biomedical Informatics (ICBI) is an academic hub for innovative research in the field of biomedical informatics with the goal of enabling a more individualized approach to health care based on a patient's DNA. ICBI works closely with collaborators at the Georgetown University Medical Center, and several other leading institutions, with the goal of advancing biomedical research in several key areas including: cancer research, drug discovery, genome research, and translational research. Meeting the many demands created by the pursuit of this mission requires a talented and diverse team, first class data management and analysis tools, as well as advanced systems and infrastructure.

ICBI turned to the Computation Institute at the University of Chicago and Argonne National Laboratory to evaluate the Globus Genomics managed platform and service offerings. ICBI was looking for a production-quality solution that helped meet the needs of their customers in executing a range of advanced genomics analysis pipelines. The initial focus was on defining, executing, and validating Exome, Whole Genome, and RNA-Seq pipelines. Globus Genomics was used to streamline the movement of large sequencing data sets, run the various workflows at scale, and provide an extensible platform to enhance the best-practice pipelines with home grown tools and approaches.

Globus Genomics was successful on these multiple fronts and provides ICBI with a valuable, flexible genomics analysis platform to complement the team's existing tools and biomedical informatics expertise. The partnership has been tremendously fruitful and will provide increasing benefits to the ICBI community of researchers.
